Battery Life!

When should I change the original battery in my 2002, 4.2L, 74K before I can expect it to give out at the worst possible time.

A battery is somewhat of a gamble, like anything else. Your battery may last another 5 or 6 years. And you could also go out tomorrow and buy a new battery, and it can leave you sitting next week or a year from now.

Things to watch out for are:

-Have you left the lights on and run the battery completely down before? And how many times has this happened. If you are alert, you can probably tell after doing this a few times, the battery does not seem to have as much oomph has it had before. This senario would be a good reason to get another battery.

-Have you noticed it may be cranking slower, especially when the going gets tough like when it's very cold. A battery will normally crank slower when it's cold, but if it's noticeably slower than usual, I would think about a new battery.

Other than the obvious reasons above when you can tell the battery is not as strong as it used to be, I do not think you can predict when a battery needs replacing.

I have run some of my batteries up to 10 years before they needed replacing. And I do not buy any special brand. A guy I work with has a 96 f250 with a 460 and the original motorcraft battery. That is going on 10 years old, and we where just discussing the other week what battery he should buy, because it is still starting the truck, but he can tell it's not as strong as it was.

When I got my truck it had the original battery in it. It was going on 9 years old, I changed it because I was going to be needing it to work no matter what in some incredibly cold conditions.

With use, vibration, being run all the way down, excessive loads the plates in the battery actually erode away. As long as the plates maintain their surface area (which you can't see,) they will perform just fine. The plates are molded onto grids, and as they deteriorate the material falls into the bottom of the case. When the buildup gets deep enough it will short the plates and the battery dies. Unless you have a light conducting case, that you could hold a bright light behind to see buildup in the bottom you will never know. Even hydrometer readings will only tell you that it is good (or not) at the time the readings are taken. Means nothing for next week.
