My motor is a purely stock 93 4.9. Got cat back and custom 2 cone intake as well as elctric fan. I rev it to redline in first (watever the computer cuts at) and probably 500 RPM less in second and third. Done it for a good 25K miles. Engine has 110K on it. All I can say, it takes it, and never even sputters atcha. I love it, will never trade it.

Twin turbo system on the way.

Mine is mildly modded...bored, cammed, carbed, headers, ignition, etc. I usually shift around 2000-2500 with no load, if I have a heavier trailer behind me I'll wind er 2800-3000. I don't drive it too hard on the street, 60-65 on the freeway. With 33s, 4.10 gears, and no overdrive she is no speed demon. Off road it sees higher rpms in the mud and dune running 4000 sometimes 4500 but it does make power up there thanks to the mods. If I'm trail riding I'll chug along at 1000-1500.

Yea I love trail riding, I can Idle up (or through ) most things people have a hard time getting through in there trucks... I dont like flying through stuff off road because I dont want to break anything and have to explain that I was going 40-50 or even 60 off road. 1 Time I had someone chasing me off road (dont ask why, Im sure you can figure out why) I had to punch it. I was doing probably 70 on the straights, beutiful all wheel drifts. I hated it though, i love my baby...

Srercrcr, I have the same set up, 300/4sp O/D and 3.08's . Well my speedo is off, and I was wondering what RPM's you turn @ 65mph in O/D.

Also I think I read something about .70:1 O/D ratio, is that correct?

When I make the big leap from 2nd to 3rd, I usually rev to 2500 in 2nd. That jump is kinda rediculous, I wonder what they were thinking. Not towing thats for sure. I'm going to switch to some 3.55's or 3.73's a.s.a.p., I think I'd still turn some low RPMs on the highway.

Schmidts.... happy to help!
I can tell you it turns 1600 at 60 mph, 1200 at 45 mph in OD. My tires are 235R15s.
Yes, the OD ratio is .70. The AOD unit is also.
Remember, 3rd is 1.0, so thats equivalent to high gear in a standard. You can use that 3rd all over town, 4th on the freeway. If you raise the rear end ratio, you're gonna lose that flexibility.

Its up there, Id say 4500-5K, Ill try to find specs on the tranny...
Ok, So I have the m5od, and hit 33MPH red line in first. With the 3.9 first gear (found that the m5od first is either a 3.9 or a 3.3), its right at 5K rpms, and somewhere around 4200 if its a 3.3. I believe its might be 5. I really wind it out, but thats been me slowly taking my truck harder and harder after I am sure that it is repsonding well to what I was doing previously.

As a general principle, it is more economical to run lower rpm's with a wide throttle opening than to run the same speed at higher rpm's with a smaller throttle opening.
Plus, lower rpm means less engine wear. (See Srercrcr's earlier post.)

Good stuff, thanks for the info. Yea I pretty much stick in 3rd for 35-55mph. Its probobly around 1800 or so at 65 mph.

Schmidts....you can calculate the 55 mph. Divide 65 by 60 (my number) and multiply that by 1600 (my number).

Brosko....are you sure? I calculate it should be like 1700 with OD.

Goodwrench...too many questions (sorry).

Brosko....I guess I'd check the odometer against the highway mileage signs.
You're sure you have 3.55 and sure it's OD?
