How do you get this thing out? I tried a flat head screwdriver and a wrench to get it out and it won't budge. I hope it is the cps. I really can't think of what else it is. The truck cranks but dosen't turn over with no tach movement. The glow plugs and relay are new. The relay does click. I also get some white smoke while cranking.
If it's stuck that good, you will probably break it getting it out but it will come. I guess you have a new one in hand to replace it with, see the metal tab on it that looks like a timing marker for the dampner? That's the only thing in the engine that has that. Get a pair of channel locks around it and see if you can twist it to get the o-ring to break loose. It should be able to be pryed out with the screwdriver then.
disconnect the harness, remove the bolt and spray with wd 40 ... it should walk out with no problem if you wiggle it a bit. wondering if someone used silicone sealant when installing the original to keep from leaking .... hmmmmmmmmm.
If you are getting white smoke, then fuel is being injected - a sure sign that the existing CPS is working.
Try jumping the large posts on the glow plug relay with a screwdriver for 30 seconds and have a partner try and start the engine.
My last CPS was a royal pain to get out. And it hadn't been in there that long. I don't know why it was stuck so bad, but with some gentle (most of the time) prying and wiggling, it finally broke loose and came out. The new one went in with not problems. Try some channel locks like guzzle suggested.
Hey Quick, when my cps went out , my truck still smoked white, but no tach. reading and the whole nine yards for a cps failure. Replaced cps and worked fine.

Ok. I wonder what was coming out of the tailpipe then.
Ahhh, the memories of removing the CPS. Bloodied knuckles, scratched arms, muscles that ached for days. Mine would not come out also. Thought that I would have to leave it in (I was putting in the Blue CPS. Once I took out the retaining bolt out of the CPS (and placed the harness to the side) I took the piece of metal and rotated it a few degrees one-way and then other. I took a wide slotted screwdriver and pried up slightly on the ridge of the CPS. The metal part came off, which was good since there was not a lot of room to work on it. I just grabbed it and wiggled it a lot, pried on a few spots accessible, wiggled some more, and about an hour later it was out. Most of the hour was scratching my head figuring out how I could do this better. I saw that it coming out by the micron, little by little it came out until it just stopped. It was the washer on the CPS stopping it from coming all the way out. At that point I just grabbed as hard as I could and pulled (as much as I could with my wrist at a 90* angle and my arm stuck between the radiator shroud and the pulley).
Now the CPS going in was a snap. Just greased the washer and popped it in. I wish it was that easy to get out.
I twist the sensor using the metal bracket for leverage, then use a long prybar to pop it out. I have never broken one (knocking on wood), but I have had some that were much harder to remove than others.
Finally came out after 4hrs of being outside in 2 degree temps. Put the new one in and it started right up. Hardest part about putting the new one in was getting that bolt in. Anyways what is that metal piece for??
