2000 Expedition - The Service Engine Soon light has come on several times in the last few months. I reset is several times and replace the gas cap. This seem to fix the problem. Then is came back on. I took it to Auto Zone and had the code read. Below is the print-put:
TROUBLE OBDII (ALPHA) P CODE
TROUBLESHOOTING P0420
The PCM has determined that the catalyst system efficiency for bank 1 is below threshold for the current engine operating condition. (Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder #1, while bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)
The suggest for the Zone people was the run a tank of the highest octane gas through it. After filling it up and run several day the SERVICE ENGINE SOON went off. Then several day later it come back on. So what’s the deal?
How many miles are on the truck? I'd try some fuel injector cleaner first. High octane gas isn't gonna do much. Run a couple fuel treatments or injector cleaners through it, and maybe replace the plugs, and see if they're running lean. we can go from there.
Ususally this is a bad cat. They are covered under warrenty for 8 years or 80K miles. your in by years. If you have less then 80k on the truck take it in to ford and get it fixed under warrenty.
yeah I got thrown off by the "bank 1" stuff. I thought it was registering trouble in one of the heads. Cleaner gasoline would lower emissions, maybe that's why it went away. Here in SC we have a different way to take care of cat problems....
