ok, so my 2000 explorer 4 door, 4.0 liter, 4x4. only has 80,000 miles on it and it has a pair of cracked heads! its only 5 years old! me and my dad wrote ford and asked if they would fix the engine but they said no. i cant believe this. ahh i dont know what to do, should i fix the cracks, or get a whole new engine? its only 5 years old and garage kept.
my check engine light came on, so i looked around and couldnt figure it out myself, so i went to my local ford dealership and they checked it and said cracked heads. One time the explorers heat gauge went up to Hot. but i pulled off and let it cool. maybe that was it.
Yeah, it probably got overheated... If you do change those heads, make sure your cooling system is up to snuff... check the accuracy of the temp sender, too, as it may have been malfunctioning, not warning you of the engine overheating sometimes. Two heads failing at once generally indicates some other issue, normally overheating.
the oil is fine, it eats coolant, and ive heard that i need to get a new engine no matter what, something about bearings. i wanna put a V8 in it. this is such a bummer, it craps out on me after 78000 miles, bull.
no, just replace the heads, it may take some time, but no water is getting into your oil, your not shooting out white smoke im guessing, what bearings? where are they located in the motor? let me know, and i'll see what i can do for ya.
No white smoke or water in the oil. and my machanic buddy told me some stuff about bearings getting worn, ill ask again im not completely sure, i just dont really wanna put money into a $30,000 car that was brand new.

Um, usually around the crankshaft and depending what they are made of and how bad the overheat was they could well be toast and then yes a new engine will be cheaper than trying maybe in vain to fix that. Just the 2 heads are going to cost plenty.
If it's eating coolant you've obviously had another problem leading up to the cracked heads. Eating coolant isn't a normal thing.
If it got hot enough to crack both heads I would bet there is some internal damage to the engine. I wouldn't waste my money swapping heads. I would be swapping the engine. I hate to be harsh but I also wouldn't be complaining about how it crapped out at 80K when it's your fault for ignoring the coolant leak!!
maybe he didnt ignore it, maybe he had it to a machanic, who knows. i would just take the money it would cost to replace the engine, and buy another car, but thats just me. every story about Ecplorers i hear are some pretty bad ones. my explorer needs some repairs (exhaust leak, Leaking transer case, the exhaust leak could be a lifter, im pretty sure its an exhaust leak)and i'm hearing air coming from the top of the enigine. is it supposed to be doing that? oh yeah, the the thermostat o-ring has ot be replaced because its leaking antifreeze. (only a $2.00 repair).... and let us know what bearings ok?
yeah i dunno, its a good lookign car, but under the hood it sucks, and its alwasy eaten coolant since weve got it, so cant blame me on that one. and the over heating problem happened after the heads were cracked, you think that it could have had a crack from factory? i dunno, im only 16 and dont make much money so im trying to get the most for my buck.
