We just got the new cam/lifters/pushrods in this 460 and it ran great, but there was a weird knocking noise. It sounded like it was coming from the right bank, so we suspected it was a valve. We took the heads off, and the valves look fine. Now Im suspecting a main or rod bearing, but it just didnt sound like one. Could it be a wrist pin? How could I tell? This engine has been abused, it was raced and had nitrous for a long time, but the bores look good.
LAST EDITED ON 06-May-01 AT 04:08 AM (EST)[p]Steve Christ's book How to rebuild big block fords has a section on this. I think you attach a timming light and see if the noise is in sync with the timming light or 1/2 the timming light. If the noise occurs twice every time the light flashes, it is at engine speed, once per light is 1/2 engine speed. Noises at half engine speed are usually in the valve train or piston slap or fuel pump. At engine speed is crank / bottom end.
The other trick is to remove plug wires one at a time to see if you can find which one is the problem, the noise will go down or away completely.
I just noticed that you took the heads off, so I guess this won't help.
I didnt do that trick, but I still think that its in the valvetrain. Upon closer inspection of the heads, I think it could be something in the springs. It has double springs, and a coulple of them are kind of off of where they should be. I cant find my spring compressor, or I would tear them apart and have a look see.
