So, I had the pleasure of running out of gas this afternoon and realized that there's a difference between "U.S. Gallons" and "Imperial Gallons." I've been checking out my gas gage and sender unit. The sender unit checked OK, and I installed a replacement gage that doesn't loose it's reading. Anyways, orginal owner's manual and the shop manual indicate the fuel tank capacity to be 19.2 "U.S. gallons" and 16.0 "Imperial Gallons." I've always wondered why my (aft) tank would only fill ~14.5 gallons when I filled it up. I now know for a fact my new gage works fine, my '79 F-100 holds 16 normal gallons of gas. I'm only six years older than the truck, but I never heard of a difference in imperial and U.S gallons and figured if anything U.S. meant the current standard of measure in USA. Has the standard changed since '79? What's the capacity of your aft tank?
seen many tanks, all are 19gal. are you sure the sender is not bent, it goes in the tank at an angle. if it is bent up, it will not use the bottom 3gal. as far as that goes, it may not even if it's not bent. good luck, Brent
THE SURGEON GENERAL NEVER SAID A THING ABOUT SMOKIN' A CHEVY!!
I had a '73 with the same problem. What happened was that the truck was high centered on the tank and pushed up loosing capacity. Took it to a friends, drainde the fuel, blocked off the lines and then took air and aired it up untill the dint poped out. It was not bashed in just a suction cup type of dint.
Hope it helps.
Brad
There is a difference in U.S. gallons and Imp (or U.K.) gallons. A U.S. gallon runs about .83 of a U.K. gallon, so a tank rated at 19 U.S. gals is about 15.8 U.K. gals.
On the other hand, I have never found a U.S. vehicle tank that filled to its rated capacity. They might be out there, just never came across one. Most tanks are rated at total volume, but when filled they allow a air space for expansion. My saddle tank is rated at 35 gal, but I can fill it with maybe 28.5 if I'm lucky.
I just put 18.89 gallons in my truck this weekend. It is a 19 gallon tank that I put in a couple years ago. What it says fits will.
