So I was reading thru my new shop manual for my 87 F150 and I found two things I can't understand in the code identification section. The first is According to my code I have a "Manual - 4-speed Overdrive" I would have thought this to mean I have a total of five gears. But I only have four as far as I know. I can move the stick up to where a fifth would be but there is nothing there.
The second puzzler is that my axel code of "18" seems to show that I should have a standard 3.08 gearing but I know I have a limited slip since I have seen the wheels spin independently. And I have a limited slip in the front I think too, and the code for that is not there either.
Any thoughts? I know some one could have changed stuff on the truck since it's new to me. But I doubt it based on the condition of everything. I guess when it's above zero next week I will crawl under the truck and see what I can find on the axel and tranny.
Okay, a 4 speed OD manual is a 3speed with a OD 4th. With and open diff, each wheel will spin independently of the other one. If it was a L/S unit it would lock up and BOTH wheels would spin at the same time.
