Key cylinder help please

Have 93 Aerostar. Recently replaced the transmission gear selector column shaft. Replaced the key cylinder on the steering column since that was broke also. However, I cannot extract the key upon turning off the ignition. Seems key doesn't turn back far enough to release. If I take the key cylinder out of the steering column, the it operates fine, key is able to turn back far enough and release. What could possibly be wrong? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Chris

Hi Attakus:

Welcome to the FTE forum Could this be the result of incorrect installation of the gear selector column shaft? Did you look at the rod that goes down the column into the switch? May be that is stuck somewhere, thus preventing the key from being turned all the way to the off position.

Sounds almost like the retaining pin is not seating properly in the hole. Mine gave me trouble like that. I had to push in fairly hard and wiggle the cylinder back and forth in order for the pin to seat.

Behind the lock cylinder there is a snap ring that holds a retainer plate in. Behind that is the gear that meshes with the teeth on the shaft that goes to the ignition switch. If you got it together with the gear out a tooth on the shaft it won't turn as far as it's supposed to.
