I already have a Magnaflow on mine and I want to free it up alittle more and sound alittle better. I'm going to gut the cat on it and run a MIL Eliminator from ponyexpress. They have the one that will fit my truck. What do you guys think? I can't wait to hear what it sounds like!!!
Not sure what a "MIL Eliminator" is so I won't comment on that. I wouldn't fool with the CAT though, as it's against the law. In Calif where I live that will get you an automatic fail on your state inspection. If by "free it up a little" you mean, get more horse power, you probably wont. Most CATS are pretty efficient right from the factory. Same for so called "performance" mufflers. With luck you might net 2-3 HP. If you're just after the sound you might want to just change mufflers. I have a flowmaster original series 40 on my 3.0L 2002 Ranger. It's a single in, duel outlet and exits under the rear bumper. I've had people tell me they really like the way it sounds. Personally it's to loud for me, but then I'm 68. So I'm replacing it with a Magnaflow. I'm told it gives a more mellow sound. Again it a single in, duel out.
A MIL Eliminator is basically a small circuit device that fools the computer that your still running a cat on your vehicle, therefore keeping the check engine light off. You only need these for 02 sensors AFTER the cat. There small buggers and splice in between the 02 sensor and the vehicle's harness.
I have a Magnaflow 2" SI/SO Center/Center and love it. It does give my little 4banger a nice low tune to it. I'll be honest, I don't keep accurate records of my MPG's but if I were to venture guess, I'm about 2mpg's up from stock exluding the Cold Air Intake.
I got flowmaster's 1 in two out on my 3.0L ranger. I too wanted to hallow out the rear cat to make it sound better, so i did. It took over 2 hours but here's some vids of what i sounds like. Keep in mind i do have MAC air intake. Here's some vids i posted in the dynomax muffler thread.
Each person has their own opinion and hallowing out the cat will make you lose power. I ran my truck in the 1/4 and got a 17.778. That's a tad slower than a stock ranger according to test done on the whipple supercharging site where they put a stock ranger in the 1/4. But if you dont care about laws, and a slight power loss and possible engine harm in the long run, go for it like i did. I dont regret it but i wont advise you to do it.
**If you noticed the rear cat on the ranger is a good bit larger than the pipe it connects to do it doesnt hurt exaust flow, it only will stop a throaty sound that some want** <- i read that on some threads so i cant take credit for saying that. It's just what i remember about this situation. Check out this thread, it might help a little. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=460016
BTW oilpan, i have a question. If that thing fools your computer into thinking you still have a cat, what just get some black paint and paint over the little light if that's all it does. BTW, my light never came on after my cat was hallowed out. I thought it should, this always confused me as to why mine never came on.

Hollowing out the cat without welding a pipe inside it to keep velocity and flow high will cause a power loss, yes. All you have now is a big chamber that completely hurts flow and kills any chance of making any power with your better flowing exhaust.
Why not do it right and get a few HP in the process?
A MIL eliminator is the "right" way to do it. There are lots of other things to cause a CEL and if you paint over it, you will never know anythings wrong. Once again, do it right.
