Refurbing a Dana 70 and the drums have pretty bad grooves in them. Friend told me to look into getting them turned before getting new ones. So does anybody have the max inner diameter of a Dana 70 drum?
New drums are only like $60 a piece at the local Autozone, which isn't bad, but thought I would look into this as well.
Don't know squat about drum brakes, will probably end up replacing them since the two don't match anyways, but it's good info to know.
I wouldn't even bother with used drums go for new thin drums cause brake fade. Thicker the drum the better the stopping power a thin hot drum will not stop the truck properly.
With inboard drums you are going to have to knock out all the wheel studs so you might aswell put new drums on as you should be buying new wheel studs.
Nine out of ten times someone had the E-brake on or it didn't release fully, right side seems to get wasted. Wrecking yard used drums at $85 when new for $58 on a Dana 60. In your case what's the other sides condition, and diameter, you may want to get both new as you don't want to get in there anytime soon. I replaced one on a Dana 60, it was made in USA, aligned concentric and was balanced perfect, careful you don't get a import copy or the likes of CarQuest which is bottom of the barrel. Those studs, I would bang out with a brass hammer, index the grooves and reuse unless damaged.
