My friend has a 74 F250 360 C6 all stock, and in the last two weeks it has blown up two mufflers. Opened them up like a can opener. I told him that the only way that I knew that to happen was letting off the gas, shutting off the ignition and refiring it.
What do you guys think is causing the muffler destroying action?

My '67 F100 was backfiring explosively on trailing
throttle. If the pedal was down about halfway or
more and then suddenly released, she'd let off
a blast that made me think the floor was going
to blow. Oddly enough it was running too lean.
After enriching the idle mixture the proplem has
almost completely gone away. It'll still backfire
a bit, but nowhere near like it was before.
You might tell him to try a different brand muffler. I went through about 3 $10 turbo mufflers on my F250 in a 2 week period before buying more expensive ones; no blow-outs yet.
exhaust back fire is usually from running too rich. Also check the timming and tune of the engine. On the FE the 7 and 8 fire in a row and the wires tend to touch. Make sure the back two wire on drivers side are seperated.
You can get a cap-adapt from the parts store that will use the larger HEI type wires to help with cross-firing. Also a welded seam muffler is best.
John, One of my friends put a new set of lifters in his truck, and it did that. Some of the lifters were shorter that others. At any rate, He's getting too much raw fuel in the muffler before he gets ignition.
Isnt that how you start the Jet, ROtate, Fuel, Ignition....
Maybe they just dont make mufflers like they used to?
