I understand your trying to save money but you could put out alittle money for new ignition sys.
I put a msd ignition box and new thicker wires 10mm
and the msd blaster coil in one of my trucks and it get on average 3-6 mpg better plus idles perfect and smogs pefectly.
Drawback is new plugs a little more often.
I have 201000 on that truck and 4x4 the hell out of it.
But I am glad for the nignition system and it is easy to install.
As Rich said, post your current mpg and other vital stats like lift, tires, mods, etc. However, even if you're getting around 16 - 18, that's still expensive nowadays if you don't have a job. IMHO, your best bet is to drive your Bronco only if it's absolutely necessary, or get a job that can pay for the gasoline, and a little more.
Buy a moped!
If you are trying to pinch pennies and save on MPG, you are driving the wrong truck. The best my 89 ever got was 14mpg. That aint too good especially with current gas prices. If you are in a bind and can't afford gas, I wouldn't spend the money to try and improve gas mileage cause you still aint gonna be that good regardless.
u can tighten the valve covers down, altho tricky causesa the upper intake. as far as mpg. for elchepo, whats ur exaust? like. to get a lil bit better flow outta stock cut the muff off. make sure ur timing is set correctly. new plugs wires and disty cap will help a good deal. then worry about ur intake. i run sae 30 in my 5.0 with 230k milage on it i can get 16.5.
i run hd40 when its warm enough but at the moment i believe i got 20/50 in it right now i put som efuel teartment in last week n replaces the plugs, cap , and the roter (didnt have the $ for the wires)n as far as exause it is stock without the muffler
The cheapest ways to save would be to make sure your tires are inflated to recomended specs, accelerate slow, you don't have to be the first person off the line from a red light.
I look like a old man when I drive, but I don't care, with gas prices not going under $2.20 for about a year now, you have to do something.
I can get 16mpg out of my 77 F-100 with a 302, 31" tires, 3.50 gears in town, driveing like a grand pa.
20W50 oil?!? I'd fix the valve cover gaskets as the oil is way too heavy. Unless the engine is on it's last leg, 15W40 should be the heaviest oil to use, but 10W30 or maybe 10W40 is what most people should be using. IMHO, a 32" tire with stock gearing could be one of the main reason behind your miserable mpg. And you may have an off-road tread, which makes things worse.
I think alot of you guys are getting pretty good MPG, considering you drive Broncos. The Bronco isn't known for the good mileage.
I have a 95 with 35inch Goodyears and 4:56 gears. My average Mileage is about 10MPG, last summer I was coming back from a trip to Moab Utah and my MPG was 8MPG. It was 10 going and 8 coming back. I had the motor checked out and it turned out to be a bad O2 senser. Thats alot of gas to go from SoCal to Utah and back? But Moab is well worth the trip!
Heres what i would do ... hitch a ride with friends on the weekday and drive it on the weekends. I mean we all know that you have the sweetest truck at school ... so drive the guys around on the weekend w/ the top off and let them drive you durring the week. B/c you know and i know that most of them have there dads gas card. Or find you a rich girl
