Question cps sensor or ?

i have a 1997 f-350 crew 4x4 psd.i was coming home from work and i went to pass another car when my truck started bucking and blew a big puff of white smoke,as soon as i let off it seemed to be fine.i figure i was at half throttle when it happened,i stopped and it idled just fine,so i revved it up in neutral and it seemed to be all hunky dory.so i changed the fuel filter and that did not seem to help, just pulling a little hill i could not get over 40 mph without it going in to convulsions and blowing white smoke.is there something else in the fuel filter housing that needs to be changed or cleaned? please help!!!!!!!

Did you clean out the regulator screen while you had the filter out?

My guess is that it is not a CPS. When mine went the engine just stopped.
I restart it and it ran fine for about 40 miles and the stopped again. No smoke on restart. I had an injector fail on a new truck with a Cummings engine that did sort of the same thing. White smoke and it would not go over 40 mph.

Injector Driver Module. With the key off, unplug all four valve cover electrical plugs. Key on, check voltage on center pin of the plugs, from battery ground to center pin. u should have battery voltage. If u have less replace IDM, only 1100 dollars from ur dealer and they proabaly have one in stock, mine did(wonder how often they fail) if you have enough diesel's around ur area.

i checked the voltage on the center pins, and they were putting out 1.3,so i would assume the IDM is toast , funny thing is after i cleaned the regulator screen it did the same thing for about 6 miles then it seemed to be all right,WRONG!! about ten minutes later it went back to the way it was,so could it be a bad connection somewhere?.where is the IDM located?

The IDM is mounted on the drivers side fender. If you can wait for shipping... get it from E-Bay. MUCH cheaper.... right now from $1 to $395.
