99 Manual vs 02 Auto?

I currently have an '02 7.3 4x2 auto, and have been thinking about changing up for a 4x4 manual. I have a line on a '99. Any issues to be aware of, seems like there is a transfer case issue with 99's? Also, for towing, how is the manual? Seems like perhaps a hard on the clutch when towing thus an auto is preferred for towing?

Get the manual. It's the best for towing, you have a closer ratio transmission. Sure you lose boost for a second every time you shift, but it comes right back up if you need it. And no torque converter slip (read heat) to contend with. I still have the stock original clutch in my truck.

If its an early 99 you'll have the better rods in case you ever start bombing the truck you dont have to worry about them breaking.

Can't beat the manual tranny for harvesting the best power band. I agree completely with Kwik. Your only loss is the year, but that's nothing to worry about. I am about 200 miles short of turning 168000 miles and I still have the stock clutch and never had a problem with the tranny yet. Knock on wood.

or even a late 1999 or 2000 or some 2001 models. the last date for Forged rods was 10-16-00 i believe. the forged rods are alot better for building power over 375 RWHP. aside from the transmission, that is the only reason i'd go for the 99 over the 2002. if it is a late 1999 (powerstroke badge on the door rather than on the 1/4 panel) i would jump on the 99.

I looked for a long time to find a decent 6-spd supercab 4x4. I gave up and bought a very low mileage auto. Oh well, at least my g/f can drive it. I hate how Ford programmed the t/c to work on these autos.

You let your gf drive your truck. She must be good, I would never even let mine touch the wheel. Just the shear though of letting a woman behind 375 RWHP is crazy.
