mounting body trim

I picked up some body trim pieces to put on my '79 custom, but was wondering how to install them. I have most of the body trim and an aluminum tailgate panel withe "FORD" on it. I don't want to drill holes in the body in case I decide I don't like it. Is there a way to securely mount the trim without drilling holes? All the catalogs show about 5 different attchment brackets, all requiring drilling holes and using rives or bolts.

Which trim are you talking about?

The only other way would be to Glue them on which would be hard to do

The tailgate is the easiest to do.

I'm talking abot the body trim that runs through the indentation on the side of the truck for the entire length of the body.

It looks like that I need to drill six holes in the tailgate to mount the tailgate trim. I just have to figure out how to get the screw holes lined up properly, as the mount tabs are on the back of the trim. Do the screws come in through the back of the tailgate or the inside? I don't have any trucks around for reference. Any tips?

Ford was smart enough to put indents where the holes go in their own tailgates.

The side trim requires T-head studs for the plastic retainers to stay on.

If the T-headed studs are missing the only ways are to rivet or screw on the retainers.

Do you need an illustration ?

Are the indents on the bedside of the tailgate? I looked the other day and couldn't see any indents on the bumper (outside) side of the tailgate. Since my truck is a '79, maybe it didn't origionally come with the tailgate trim panel, so no indents.

My truck was an F-100 Custom, so there are no holes or studs, as it didn't origionally come with any trim.

I have some truck catalogs that show where the retainers go. Thanks for offering an illistration, though. Looks like a headache to purchase all the retainers and get them mounted properly. i was hoping to avoid drilling holes in the truck, but it looks like there is no other way. i was hoping someone had found a way to use adhesive tape to mount the body trim.

Double sided 3M foam tape would work, but don't expect it to last more than a year.

I went out and looked at my truck this morning and didn't see any indents anywhere on the tailgate or body for mounting trim. I looked on both the inside (pretty scratched up- hey, its a truck) and the outside of the tailgate.

The indents on the tailgate for the sliver FORD panel, are on the outward side of it.

Look close as they are quite small, so they don't stand out in a major way.

I bought a hood from a fella and he started handing me some trim peices his son decided not to use when fixing up their old truck. The only place I have seen tailgate trim for sale is EBay. Dennis Carpenter sells body trim, other than a few tailgate peices, but it is much cheaper on EBay.

Thanks Mil1ion, you've been a great help. I'll wash my truck and maybe I can see the indents better. I'm looking forward to getting that tailgate panel on there for cleaner look.

Tailgate panel on, pics in the gallery. Also painted my bumper silver and added a tailgate guard my Dad gave me. Cleaned it up nicely. Never did find the indents on my tailgate.

What kind of trim did the guy give you? If you decide not to use it and it's the kind without the black insert, I'd be happy to take at least one piece off your hands.

It's the XLT trim that has that has the black rubber in the middle. I haven't seen much of the other trim without the rubber.
