I started noticing this a few days ago. The idle doesn't jump a whole lot; just enough to notice a change in the engine sound and to make the tach jump a bit. It only does it after the engine is warmed up. I just changed fuel filter a week ago when I changed the oil, so I don't think that's causing it. Hopefully someone here has experienced the same thing. Thanks!
mine does the same thing. I just got my 99 and are new to the PSD. I thought maybe it was programmed to do this, it will idle low, then kick up a litle bit (making a really cool sounding turbo spoolup sound) and then come back down after a minute or so. Much drastic change from my 89 IDI, that just sits and rattles.
Mine will only jump about 50 rpm or so going by what the tach says. It's not enough to spool up the turbo but I do notice the change in the sound of the engine. It doesn't cackle or run rough, either. I thought maybe it was fuel,
but I filled up with biodiesel yesterday and it made no difference.
Check all your electrical connections under the hood for the engine. Sensors, valve cover plugs, etc. Unplug and reconnect each one. There may be a small spot of corrosion and it's sending a bad signal.
Beyond that you might have a tired, clogged IPR valve on the HPOP or a flaky ICP sensor.
But don't take my word for it. I'm no expert on the PSD. I've learned just enough to be dangerous.
I'll give that a shot Kwik. I cleaned the engine compartment last weekend so I could have bumped something. Forgive my ignorance, but where is the ICP sensor located at? Luckily so far I haven't had to dig too deep into the engine compartment so I don't know where that one is.
am I to understand that these trucks are supposed to have a smooth, consistant idle ? For long periods of time with no fluctuation ? I though my low/high/low was to keep the motor from being damaged from long periods of idle time.
Mine just started doing it though, and it fluctuates a great deal. Once the engine is warmed up, the tach is bouncing a lot at idle. It doesn't seem to make a difference if it's in gear or not, either. For the record, though, my truck has never boosted the idle after idling a while. How often does your truck do it Jeff?

It's the three pin sensor mounted in the left cylinder head kind of forward.
i let it idle for probly 30 minutes once last week while I was moving trailers with the tractor. I noticed it would warm idle for maybe 30-50 seconds or so, then spool up the turbo to a higher idle for about the same amount of time, then back to low idle. It did this on a regular, timed basis. I thought it was really neat, I have heard before that extended periods of idle is not good, specially for 7.3 with their inherent low oil pressure problems at idle.
I agree W/kwik.Probably icp or ipr.I do have the same problem myself, but it's
intermittent.Mine usually idles dead on 650 rpm's,when it act's up it'll bounce
around up and down 10rpm's.I found icp's on ebay for under $40,I'm gonna try
that next.

I use DELO 400. The previous owner used it since he bought it new so I decided to just keep using it. The only thing I have done differently is I started using B99 biodiesel about 3 months ago, and I've changed the fuel filter twice since then. I checked all my connecters under the hood yesterday, and everything is tight. I guess the next thing to look at is the ICP. I also noticed that it will occasionally run rough right after you restart it when the engine is warm. It kind of does a "rump rump" thing a couple of times, then smooths out.
