Has anyone stuck a zf five speed behind a carburated 460 in a half ton, shortbed, single cab pickup? I'm going to be finally getting one for my 1980 and i'm wondering if will actually effect my mileage. I'm thinking so since i'm running 3.50 gears, 33s, and the pickup only weighs about 4500 pounds. I get an average of about 8 right now, and that's with a four speed the 750 double pumper pumping double..
It has a standard np435 four speed in it now. It had a C6 in it with a 351 windsor, but when I switched to a big block I didn't have the transmission for it, so I had to switch to the standard, which I actually prefer, so It worked out great.
You'll see a much bigger jump in mileage when you switch from C6 to 5 speed manual than you will 4 to 5 speed manual. Even then, your savings really come when your on highway as compared to city. The thing to remember about the C6 is it is not a lockup converter so it waste gas with every rev. You can put a gear vendors behind it but it will only save you some fuel on the highway and will not come close to a 5 speed manual tranny. See my gallery for a few pics of my NV4500 swap. I am very happy with it and it doubled my mileage compared to the C6.
