Trying to replace the rear end main housing gasket on a '76. Removed the pinion gear and retainer, but the housing will not come off. It's loose and will start, but will not slide off. What's the trick to getting the housing off?
LAST EDITED ON 11-May-01 AT 11:30 PM (EST)[p]If you have both axles out as Stingray pointed out, Check to make sure that you have removed all of the copper washers, one for each stud. They are a crush fit on the studs and often catch the threads. If you have all of the washers off, then you have a problem where the studs are not perfectly square with the bores on the housing. Nothing to do but pry a little around the housing, bringing it off of the studs evenly. Put a floor jack under it to support the weight as it clears the studs. Its hard to hold when you are on your back. Mike.
