Greeting fellow Fordoholics. I am the proud owner of a 71 Ford F250 2x4.
This is what i would like to know about my truck. Did my truck come from the factory without a locking steering wheel collar or is mine broken?
Also, is it difficult to fix the turn lever return mechanism. I sort of recall it was some type of cam mechanism. What's involved and who will have the parts?
I've never seen a locking setup on the older ones. I've only seen them on ones where the key goes into the shaft instead of mounting to the dash. I think it was late 70's or early 80's. As for the blinker return, you might try LMC Truck, I've seen some where it's a plastic ring and a pin, you may try to remove it and see if something just fell out or broke off.
If the '71 is like my '73, the signal return is a piece of plastic that hits two pegs stuck in the horn button area. The piece of plastic has little ears on it that used to be flexible. One of mine broke, and I went to my local Ford dealer and bought just the piece of plastic. It has to be riveted on, so I drilled the old one out and attempted to rivet it the new on. I couldn't get it tight and in the right place, so I ended up going back to the dealer and buying the whole piece. That included new signal contacts, and replaced the hazard switch that didn't work anymore. It's in LMC for $80, but I don't remember paying that much.
I see a part in my LMC catolog that is definitly not $80. Most of my other catologs have parts that can help fix this. You will need to just look around at the different parts houses.
