I'm trying to use the U shaped tools to pull out my radio so I can put in an FM modulator to hook up an ipod. I'm having trouble. I don't think the trim is blocking me but I can't get the radio "unhooked". Is there a trick to this? Do you have to pry a certain way on the tools? Use some WD-40? It is a 2001 expedition with 6 disk changer in the center console and a cassette radio. The radio has the two sets of holes and sure looks like it should just pull out. I've never used the extraction tools before so I don't want to get too rough without knowing what to expect.

You do need to pull off the trim that surrounds the radio. Just take a putty knife or screw driver and you should be able to just pry it off. The plastic trim just clips in.
I've removed the radio, need a switched 12V source
Thanks for the great tips. Prying off the trim was key and once I had it off I fiddled with the tools and it radio came right out.
Now I need to find 12 volts that is only on when ignition is on. I want to operate an FM modulator and an ipod and only want the stuff energized when the car is running. The two cigarette lighters are on all the time.
Any ideas where to tap into some switched 12 volt?

Check the wies on the connectors going into the back of the radio. Black with pink stripe should be switched.
I thought I'd tell you... I can't remember where I bought it (do a search or look around in the Audio/Video forum down further) but I purchased a device that allowed me to replace my 6 CD change with a pair of RCA cables to connect my MP3 player. A bit cleaner perhaps but the FM Modulator will work just fine.
once the face plate is off, how do get the radio out. I want to put in a wire that will run from the radio to my mp3 player. I freind of mine told me to hook it into the amp. Help.
The U-shaped pins fit into the holes. Only push in until you feel a slight click. Once that is done push outward on both of the U-shaped tools (towards the doors) and pull straight back.
