I am interested in swapping out the 3-speed manual to 5-speed. I am unsure what my options are. I would like to have overdrive. My truck drinks gas like it is going out of fashion. And with todays prices... need I go on.
What about an automatic? I would consider swapping in an AOD. I have heard that these will not work with aftermarket carbs.
With the 302 I think you can just get a Mustang tranny and have the drive shaft made to fit. Tremec makes 5 speed sold thru Jegs.com for $1009 and $1409 and a Richmond 6 speed for $3321. The only down side is that these are car trannies and might not give the low end grunt you'd get from a truck tranny.
If you can't find what you want in a 5 speed, consider changing the rear end gears, it's by far the cheapest and pretty easy to do. You'd give up low end for some freeway speed.
keep in mind that if you reduce the freeway rpm too much, you'll be out the the idea torque range of the engine and it might cost you some mpg or make you downshift on every hill you see.
What's your rpm at 65? If it in the 1900~2100, that might be best for that engine.
I was looking at the mustang 5-speeds. The only issue I see with using one is where the shifter would be located in the cab. I assume that a new stick would have to be made, long enough to be reachable in the truck? I think I could modify the truck to be compatable with the cable type clutch linkage.
The Richmond tranny's are nice but a bit outside my budget.
I had a four speed from a 79 Merc. Capri in my 74 F100 302(slightly warmed). The main problem I had was the shifter. It had to be extended and even at the it came out barely in front of the bench seat.I loved it I am considering taking my C6 out and putting it back in. As far as gas milelage The 5 speed might increase milage a little. With most transmissions high gear unless an overdrive are 1 to 1 ratios. Good luck with improving your millage we are all feeling the pain.
