I have a 69 Ford F250 300 straight 6. We bought it from a guy who never kept the oil changed. We kept up the maintenance on it and it ran really good for us for over a year. We started noticing a problem when we hauled a 4000 lb camper behind it. We sold it and bought a 2300 lb 8 1/2' truck camper. The truck has a 6100 GVWR. We've carried this camper in the truck before with no problems. We just rescently found out that the rings were shot so we are in the process of rebuilding. I am having problems deciding which cam to buy for it. We have the choice of installing the stock cam in it or getting a low end torque cam. Some say it is fine to go with the stock cam because that truck was made to haul, and work hard. One person said I have the best of both worlds...a heavy duty truck with a small engine but it wasn't made to carry that kind of weight. I have granny gear which helps but the truck shows no sign of any problems when carting that camper. I am not sure what would be best in this situation.
RV cam will make even more torque than the 300 already has. They are made for hauling loads. The RV cam will probably move your power curve down by about 500 RPM. If I were doing it, I would take the RV cam, and add some headers to allow the engine to breathe better. The stock exhaust is very restrictive. If you are up to it, a little port work on the exhaust side helps to. Just a little though, clean the casting flash off.
