I've decided to replace my cam in my 69 Ford F250 300 straight 6. It is a Crane low end torque cam which will help with hauling my truck camper. My question is, according to the place I bought it from, I have to "tune the cam" and "go according to the specs for the cam". I'm not sure I understand what they mean. I told him we were rebuilding the engine ourselves (with some help from a machine shop on the head and block) but can't we just install the new cam? That's what I would have done with a stock cam? I would think it's ready to place in the engine, no extra service needed.
They are referring to 'Dregreeing the Cam'. In order for the cam to preform as adverised, your supposed to degree the cam to ensure that it ground properly.
There you will find a PDF file that will explain what is meant by tuning a cam and to do it. Crane used to have a webpage with this info on it but they have changed things around.
If the PDF file is the same as the old webpage, it will also explain how advancing/retarding the cam will affect your power/torque curve.
