Air lockers in winter

Just finished a engine, tranny and T-case rebuild .....Lift, tires and winch ......

Now it's time for the gears and lockers. I built this truck mainly for hunting and especially for use in the winter. I plan on using this rig when it is really cold and I want a selectable locker system. ARB's are what I am thinking about.

I have had people tell me "ARB lockers collect moisture, so they can freeze and break". I am also wondering if the airlines or tank could encounter problems with freezing...... Any real world experience with this?

Well my ARB's work just fine when theres snow packed all over the differential and axle housing.
Never had any problems with them due to freezing temperatures.

I used my ARB's when we had sub zero temps. There's no issues. If you're in a colder climate (or even if you're not) I'd recommend throwing out the blue plastic air line that comes with them and put in stainless braided line. Other than that you'll be just fine.

Cap'n ... I was hoping you would give me some input. You climate is similar to mine.

I was wondering what type of moisture trap you use to get the water out of your system?

And if you ever noticed water in you axle lub?

I don't have a water filter in my system. I don't use a tank at all so I don't think moisture is a problem. My compressor feeds straight into a manifold via a check valve and from the manifold it feeds the solenoids and pressure gauges. If I was going to use a storage tank I'd probably add a filter before the manifold, you can pick them up for pretty cheap at Harbor Freight or any pneumatic supply shop.

No issues with water in my axle lube. I have my vent tubes up high to keep water out of them. Contrary to what some people believe there is no air pressure in the axle housing itself with an ARB system. You have a copper line that feeds a collar on the carrier and all the pressure is there. If you have pressure in the diff housing/axle tubes then you have a bad o-ring on the pressure collar and your locker won't function correctly.

Just add a bit of alchol to tank air from time to time and it will prevent it. Trucks with air brakes use alchol injection to help prevent air line freeze up in winter.

Great info....... Looks like freezing is not an issue. Guess it's time to dump some more cash into the money pit. Sure will be nice to be fully "locked" if I need it.

I don't know how nice my Bronco is but I like it. I put a picture in my gallery and I will see if I can get it to show up on this post.

If you are worried about moisture and water. If you really wanna get creative you can run the air line through your condensor on your AC it will remove close to all of your moisture that cna get trapped in your tank. I would just get a water trap before the mani and you should get a good long life outta your ARB

A interesting comcept but air losses have of its moisture cntent capabilty for each 20c you cool it so even if it was 40% humidity at 50F , at zero it would be over 100% and frosting out. You could get rerally creative and up a compressure mitrogen supply through a regulator as nitrogen cannot hold any moisure in it.

Quite a few guys use CO2 tanks to run their ARB's and I've read of a couple using nitrogen. It can be done but it's so damn simple to set it up with a compressor and you never have to worry about refilling a tank, fiddling with the valve, etc.

with an arb, does the actuator for the locking mechanism pull lube from the gear oil, or do you have to put oil in the line like a air tool?
