Question Turbo Boost

How much boost can an idi engine take. And what mods can i do to let it handle more boost. I know that the weak point is the head gasket does anyone make a head gasket that will handle big boost or what can i do to it to make it handle big boost.
Thanks,
Jeremy

It's my understandng that the HG's get iffy around 15 PSI. Headstuds and o-rings should allow you to test the limits of the bottom end.

Question

OK thanks but what are the O rings.
Where would i find those headstuds and O rings and would i just screw the studs in the block and then drop the heads on and put a nut and lock-washer on the other end of the studs or is there somethin special to do?

o-rings are just what they sound like. You would get the block or heads machined to accept steel o-rings to contain the high boost. Head studs install pretty much as you described it.

The best guy I know personally to talk to about a hi-po IDI would be Ken at DPS-performance.com

i agree, anything over 15 lbs is pushing it. i had my 88 over that a few times before i detuned it, and i noticed that over 15-16 it blows by the rings, and pushes oil out of the motor into the crank case breather.

Stock or full boogie? Dunno abut the stock turbo IDI...I'd guess 7-9 psi. A stock 94-97 PSD will produce around 17psi, but can hold around 40-45 PSI before the HG's give you trouble. I've seen a guy with a 6.0 that can push 50+ through the stock turbo, but with only 10 headbolts the 6.0 tends to lift the heads and puke coolant when you turn them up too much.

I run 10-15 on a regular basis (daily) but I have headstuds. I wish I would have done the O-rings too though, just for piece of mind and future options for power increase would be more plentiful.

I get 11-12 lbs when to the carpet on my 83 6.9. I changed the head gaskets a couple of months ago and with 156k on the clock the gaskets looked mint.

Put studs in it for ****s and giggles, but don't think it will make much difference. I have a couple associates that have reused the head bolts on their rides without any troubles, though.

The farther the turbo is from the engine the less it will produce as far as boost goes.
Also you will be dealing with restrictions from the length of the line from the turbo to the intake and all the bends it would have to have.
I also have to wonder what happens when you drive through a pothole and splash cold water up on a 1100 degree turbo.

I think I will keep my ATS which is giving me 18 PSI.
Running stock head bolts also.

To install head studs you are looking at pulling the engine, once the studs are in the block there is no way to get the passenger side head back on.
