I love older trucks, newer ones are more prone to break.( oxymoron, but still, older cars are built better from the start, there for last longer)
The bronco II has a wimpy 2.9 140 hp engine, but it is an engine that will last you over 200,000 miles. I like stuff that lasts over high horsepower. How dose the escape engine perform over time.
Isnt the escape front wheel drive??
The bronco II hates bad drivers, there for it gets back by rolling over. The bronco is not a sports car and wehn drivin properly its perfectly safe. I dont know why they discountinued it.

As for an off road veh. the BII is a better bet.For on the road trip veh. the Escape will do you a better job. JMO.
The BII will do for a daly driver but the newest BII you can find is 16 years old already.I have a BII and a Tribut and both are good vehs.but I dont went to drive or ride my BII across the country, nor would I went to drive my Tribut on a back woods wheelin trip.
Escapes are front wheel drive or all wheel drive.
Ford discontinued the Bronco II by replacing it with the Explorer, and in the process selling about 4X more Explorers than they ever did Bronco II's. Unfortunately, they still had a rollover problem.
they sold so many more becuase explorers arew still around today lol over 12 years of production compared to 6. Also the explorer didnt have the title brought on buy suv pionting lawyers right away like the bronco II's reputaion had after the first year of production.
I'm not talking about total production, I'm talking about units sold per year and the Explorer was far more popular than the Bronco II. The Explorer was a runaway hit, launched the SUV market and made billions of $ for Ford. Of course, there was the tire/rollover fiasco. Maybe that was because the original Explorer was built on the Bronco II chassis.
The Escape is not designed for going off road but as the best selling compact SUV plenty of people obviously like it. If you want something compact and want to go off-road you should check out the Jeep Liberty. The Liberty has a full frame and is trail rated. In that regard it is more like the Bronco II than anything else I can think of.
in JP magazine they dont even consider the jeep liberty able to go off road. The libery is just an escape under the jeep name. I think the bronco II would out perform it off road. Somthing like the wrangler is the best from jeep for off roading. But were are you gona find a good running wrangler for 800 bucks like you can with a bronco II?
The bronco 2 is pretty good off road in stock form, and with some bolt on's, it's real good. With a soild front axle installed, it's a jeep. With a v-8 installed, it's about as good as the old bronco's, 66-77. I had an 01 escape, I took to W,Va wheeling and deer hunting and such, it did well for what it is, I never ended up walking, probbley should have, it was abused! My 84 bronco had the advantage offroad for sure. The escape has the advantage on road, more power, and handled like a car. You can get a 2 inch lift for the escape, and aliittle bigger tire, that would help alot, a lsd would really make a difference, but still no low range. The duratec 3.0 can easily hit 200,000 miles if maintained. The jeep liberty is unibody also, but it does have low range. It all depends on what you need a vehicle for.
pretty much he bronco II is the best for your money if you want to go off-road other then the 66-77 broncos. It dose great in stock form, which you most likley wouldnt find at all today unless you bought a 24,000 dollar rubicon. And if you want more from it possiblitys are nearly unlimted!!! You can swap in the 4.0 engine with no mods to the frame, as if it was made for that truck. If you own a 1989-90 bronco II the 4.0 is a direct swap with all the wiring being plug and play. With the 86-88 broncos you need to do some wiring but nothing to harsh. Dont like the axles?? Find any axle off a explorer and there you go. Dont like the roof..CUT IT OFF and make a bronco II mini pick-up.ETC.... I think the bronco II is the most versitile vehicles made by ford.
i know this is a ford site, but the subject of bang for your buck off roading did come up, and i would put my money with toyota, either a early 80's pickup, or one of the old land cruisers, some how those things dont just climb rocks, they are rocks, and talk about limber.
My dad had a toyota pick-up It lasted long....then rusted to nothing and the motor blew up. Toyotas are underpowerd as far as i know. then again, its a toyota, what can you expect?..... Buy a ford, and support OUR country please lol
If your were to go outside of ford, forget that jap junk, just buy a jeep. The best offroad vehicles ever built, were jeeps, old bronco's, and scouts. For full size, go with the j-10 jeep pickup's or wagoneer's, or the 76-79 f-150's and the old blazers.
