I am in the market for a new '05 0r '06 F-150 XL. I would like a work series model to avoid any headaches with PL/PW. I do not have anyone that I know that owns either. I don't haul much or have anything to tow but would like to just make it into somewhat of a sleeper. Fast, mean, and lean. I don't know anything about the new 3 valve engine or the type of trans. thats available. Is their anything that I should know about before I make my purchase? (i.e.) Powertrain, mechanical things to look for. Your opinion is valued. Thank you...

I don't know what you mean by PL/PW, unless you mean Power locks, Power windows. Power locks or Power windows is not available on the XL. Double check this when you discuss your buy with the Dealer.
Fast, mean and lean means the 5.4, 3 valve engine. An option on the XL. I have one. If your not towing, the 3.31 axle is nice for gas mileage. I have that too. It will scratch rubber at my command. The 3 valve engine has been around for a long time with a lot of admirers. If you intend to sleep or have a sleeper in the bed, then get the 8' box. This will give you room to stretch out, plus some extra room for camping/sleeping goodies. If you intend hot or desert driving I recommend a tow package. This gives you the larger radiator and tranny cooler. If your dong a fair amount of off road driving then the 4X4 is recommended. No sense getting stuck all by yourself. The transmission comes in Column Shift or Floor shift. Discuss this with the Dealer. I only have the column shift and my Helms is a difficult read.
I have a short bed XLT regular cab 4X4 with the 5.4 and 3.73 gears along with the tow package. It does very well for me. The regular cab is the lightest F150 (but it's still heavy at 5,110). The 5.4 engine has a heavier duty transmission than the 4.6. Also, the rear end is a 9 3/4 rather than the 8.8 on the 4.6. I got an XLT because I wanted the power windows and door locks. It's a long way from the driver's seat to the passenger door. Power windows and door locks are much more reliable than they used to be and it really makes a difference at resale time.
