a couple of months ago i walked by a duramx running and noticed how quiet it was, it really amazed me it being the size of the engine it is. but i guess my question is, despite how dumb it is, why the different sounds? i understand the dodges sounding different, but why would the chevy and ford be so different? and how is it quieter? by the way, i am no diesel expert at all, just got my first one and this is not intended to be a debate on which engine is better, i am happy with my ford.
The Duramax runs Common Rail injection if I recall. Pilot injection means that the injection stage isn't one "shot" of diesel, but a couple. It doesn't create such a huge clatter.
That is correct. Pilot or Pre injection is two shots of fuel. A small one preceding the main charge. It was found to reduce the noise, spredding out the clatter over two separate detonations. Ford had problems with it and removed it via the software. This is why the PS is louder than the Dmax. If I am correct, originally the PS was the quietest diesel, but Ford had to many problems with it. It is the wave of the future though as diesels must get quieter so more people will use them. Eventually, you will see them in cars in the US like you can already in Europe. That is the basics of it anyway, all I know about it.
wow, interesting info, i had no idea that the comp was so involved with the diesel, i wonder why ford decided to scrap it all togeher? is it they couldn't at all get it to work or just went the cheaper route? and is there an advantage/disadvantage to either system?
