My parents just got back from New Zealand and Australia and they brought be back a didgeridoo.
Does anyone know how to play these instruments?
I am able to get the basic drone noise out of it, but I am unable to make any vocals come out. The only ones I have tried are the Owl and Kookaburra sound and am unsucessful.
i wish i knew!!! my aussie friend has one, but he is away for a walk-about at this time down in south america, it does have a strange sound to it though. i can't wait for my vacation down there, will be picking myself up a few souvineers also, including one of those.
I think you first need to know how to be able to breathe out of your mouth and in through your nose simultaneously, this way you can hold the notes for much longer. I think everything else was just a matter of breath control and muscle movements, like in your throat and mouth. Just play around with it and do all kinds of different things...not too many people know how to play or even what a didgereedoo sounds like, so anything you try will sound cool to anyone else.
You play them like a trumpet.I make them out of century plants, found in
my surrounding desert.Every one I've made sounds different and some are hard
to play at all.
To play a didge you need to learn circular breathing, but it isn't essential if you want to play in short bursts while you are learning.
What you do, is blow down the didge and allow your lips to vibrate, this will resonate up and down the tube creating the droning noise you are familiar with.
You need to be relaxed - you concentrate too hard, and your lips freeze up.
Now, once you have got that bit, start with "loose lips" and gradually tighten them - this creates the pitch change.
Once you have got that, give us a yell and I will tell you how to circular breathe
Basically, you will use your mouth as a chamber to store air instead of it being supplied directly by your lungs. Since your mouth is sealed off from your lungs, now you can inhale through your nose, while still allowing air to come out of your mouth. The only way to get good is to practice, even then, it took me a while before I could do it without thinking about it.
