97 explorer have to be programed for a computer change?
I have a 97 explorer 2wd & I am having transmission problems..wants to take off in high gear unless dropped to low gear manually..OD light flashes..codes show gear selector problems..solenoid A,B,C,D,.....speedometer doesnt work either..replaced speed sensor at tranny..bene told there is one on rearend..dont know what it does if anything..been told by a local mechanic that the computer is probably bad..can I install a junkyard computer or will I have to have it programmed by a new car dealership?
Thanks,Brian
THe speed sensor in the rear is for the ABS.. (wouldn't affect shifts)
THere's a simple way to eliminate the computer as the problem, go to a good Transmission shop... they have a box there that can connect to the transmission control harness, and then they can simulate upshift / downshift commands, etc. If everything works well with that, then you might have a computer issue. Replacement should not require any programming, unless your model integrates anti-theft function in the PCM...not likely.
Cool..thanks..most tranny shops around here only have the snap on machines to access codes from computer..I also found out there is suppose to be a tranny computer under the console..junkyard has one for 25 bucks..might be worth a try being that cheap..Thanks again..I call around more tomorrow & check to see what I can find out
I had a similar problemon my 97, after much searching and diagnosing it turned out to be the "PRNDL" switch on the side of the tranny, replaced it no more problems.
