i when to the junkyard today and found what looks to be either a 302 or a 351. i want this engine to get some rebuild practice in. i was wondering how do i tell the difference in the 302,351, thanx
For EFI the easiest way to tell is by the upper intake manifold. It'll either say 5.0 or 5.8 or it can be seen in the fact that the 351 uses oval shapes ports vs the 302's squared ports.
Another is the way the distributor is, the mounting surface of where the distributor hold down clamp/bolt is placed on a 351 is lower in the block than on a 302. The 351 is also wider but that's hard to see.
You can also check the firing order of it and see if it's a 351 or 302 firing order. Almost if not all of the trucks that had 302s were not 302HO's. The HO's had the 351 firing order.
