I need to replace the wiring harness in my 74 F100. Was thinking of going aftermarket but cant afford the $400+ pricetag right now so was gonna look at the local yard this week. Was wondering what years will fit the 74? I figured since the parts range from 73-79 that maybe the harnessess will to?
The ignition switch harness and the instrument gauge harness changed during 1976 and again in 1978 as did the fuse panel box. 1973 thru 1975 will require the least modifcations, make sure they don't cut any wires on the harness, such a ground terminals, plug connectors. here a picture located in my gallery of some of the wire terminals and ground. https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...=94720&width=0
You are partly right. The thing is, if you are going to change it, get everything you can. Guages and idiot lights are different, and different years are different. That gives you about 10-14 harness variations. I put a 74 guage set on a 77 idiot light harness, but it was a pain. The newer ones have more circuit protection, and the engine part is setup for duraspark.
Long story short 74 F100 w/ 78 351M C6. Previous did a real hack job on the wiring getting it in. No neutral safety, reverse lights, have a toggle switch to power coil to start plus wires that are supposed to go somewhere that dont. Just a real nitemare. Have wires that start as one color at fuse block and change 3 and 4 times till they get to where theyre goin. I've pulled several ***** of wire out from the dash that didnt go to anything. Only guages on dash that works are speedo and fuel everything else is aftermarket. Will eventually rewire completely but am just looking for sumthing to work with till that happens.
fyrrmann, if you decide on the newer model harness, 1976 thru a 1979 harness, of the donor truck. Purchase the instrument gauge panel, ignition module, and ignition switch. Will need to purchase a electronic distributor with a pickup coil for the make of engine. You will then have converted your engine to electronic ignition. Take you time when removing the harness. Make sure no - one has gotten in there and cut wires before you go in and remove or purchase the harness.
