Hey guys, I am having some issues with my heater. When I got the truck it didn't work because it was by-passed on the water pump. I found out that the vacum motor under the hood had the infamous "broken white vacum line". Easy fix. Sothen I hooked the heater up and the temperature never got into the normal range but it should have been blowing warmer than it was. So I changed the thermostat and the engine temp got up to the o in normal and stayed in the general area but the heater core started to leak and still no real heater.
I changed the heater core and went up the road temperatur got up to the m in normal and fell back to the o. Still no real heater. I put every thing back inplace and all the vacum motors are working. I am baffled, the hoses going to the heater core are very hot and the cover in front of the heater core is very hot but the air is just barely warm. I need help. thanks
I will try the hoses, I cant remember if I got them back in the same place? That may be the problem. The baffles works okay because on vent I only get air from the dash, on Floor it comes out on the floor, ect ....
I did find out that if you put the control *** on max a/c ( my ac does not work because it has low refridgerant and I took the fuse out) the heater gets hotter. I guess this recirculates the cabin air? And the vent setting vents air from the outside?
direction of flow in the heater hoses will eliminate air in the core. you want the incoming hot water to go to the lower side of the core, and the outlet from the top. max ac recirculates inside air, regular air pulls in fresh air. are both heater hoses the same temp?? if so, then it is a blend door problem. if one is hot, and one is cold or cool, then you have a blockage in the heater system. since you said you just replaced the core, we can assume that you do not have a flow problem. to test the blend door function, move the temp control from hot to cold to hot. when you get to cold, you should hear the door seat, or bang closed, then the same when you go back to hot, you should hear the door seat. if you do not hear the blend door seat, that is your problem.
I think that my blend door is not closing. I remember that when I changed the core there was som debris and a pencil and pen inside the DUCTWORK??? I tried to get all of the item out but may have missed one. I dont remeber getting the pencil out. I am going to take the cover off and look with a mirror to see if there is anything out if sight. Thanks guys I hope that is it. But I do have another post on a cooling problem so feel free to read it too.
My 89 ford did the exact same thing as what you are describing, the heat would not get very hot at all. My dad kept telling me to put cardboard in front of the rad to get the engine compartment warmer, but that didnt really help alot either. I have checked the thermostat, and made sure there is good flow going through the heater core. I Cant remember trying the blender door thing though, so I will have to try and test that and see if that helps.
