howdy everyone! Has anyone ever done business with clearwater cylinder heads
--they have what seems to be a good deal-a completely reworked head for my 351m for $135(each) with free shipping on the core and a core charge of $75
HOWS THAT SOUND? does anyone know of any better deals??? thanks
that's a pretty low price, but you only get what you pay for. i'd be surprised if there are anything but used factory Ford valves in them, and used factory springs that may or may not "check out". for some circumstances that is fine, but i like to sleep at night. these aren't my pics, but it has happened to me.
it doesn't have to be a race engine running at redline, mine was completely stock that had just had a "valve job". the head of the valve did a dance on top of the piston, damaged the head and cylinder wall then went south to retire in the muffler. you can get one piece valves on Ebay for a little more than $100.
I have a local friend that does them, starting out at $100 if I buy the parts, this includes all the machining necessary.... Its a pretty good deal, if you are doing any kind of performance, you need to have somebody set your spring heights, you can't get that with a mass rebuilder.
Try O'Reilly Auto Parts.

Have them order 4 and look them over good. Pick the 2 best ones.
They are re-worked heads. Some I have gotten had all new valves, seats and guides. Others were a mixture. We have used several pair so far since we discovered they had them at a good price. All have been acceptable.
We always disassemble them, cut in positive valve seals and replace the springs with Crane or Compcams to match the cam being used along with the Crane Pushrod Guide plate Conversion Kit (52655-16). If the valve guides have been replaced then you need to watch the clearance between the seal and retainer.
