I have a 79' F-150 4x4 and have a howling rear diff.(Detroit Locker). Where can I get rebuild parts for it.(ring, pinon, etc.)
If anyone can help me with this I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
how long has it been howling? is this a recent install ? the locker. you can get a ring and pinion from summit, or jegs, they both have web sites. they also offer an installation kit, if it is a recent install i would take it back to whoever installed the gears and have them redo it they dont have it setup correctly.

It has been howling ever since my rear axel housing broke. After having it welded and beefed up the howling began. There is obvious wear on the pinon. I live in Mexico and the mechanic down here could of screwed something up when putting it back togather. Is there something common during installation that makes them howl? Thanks for the feed back.
if there is too much back lash in the gears, it can howl, or if the pinion bearing is bad, or the pinion shim was not the correct thickness. if he removed the pinion and did not set the pinion depth, or properly torque everything that can happen.did your mechanic rebuild the diff? or just weld it. where was the crack? if he didnt know what he was doing when it comes to setting up gears he could have seriously screwed them up. a lot of mechanics dont. it is best to take them to a driveshaft shop. they generally specialize in that kind of thing. i would find someone you trust and have it rebuilt properly. chances are your gears are just fine. the bearings might even be able to be reused, (depending on age) you are looking at about $200 to have it cleaned and reassembled.

The crack in the axel housing was about 16 in. toward the tire from the diff.. It was just welded supports welded on and the diff. put back together. Thanks for the help! I'll start looking for a qualified diff. mechanic but I may need to haul it up to the states to get it done correctly. I suppose I'll have to take the whole rear end up right? Can anyone suggest a good place to have it done in San Diego or Riverside Counties.
