I put a 460 in 2 years ago and its amazing. I had the 400 in for 179k and am not complaning. It did everything I asked of it include pulling my 65 Lincoln over the mountains a couple of times and one time carry a bunch of rocks with GWR at 11500, only rated at 7200. I got my money out of it, but my 460 seems the be twice as strong. Its not stock and while I have yet to put it on a dyno, I figure its at about 400hp and close to 600lbs of torque. I had to disconnect the kickdown because on wet roads it would break the rear end loose. Mash the gas pedal to the floor and you can burn the tires off the rim. Gas milage is about the same, maybe a little better. This is the first truck I've had with a big block and I will never go back.
my understanding is that if the 400M is in front of an automatic transmission yes it will bolt up, but that the sticks are different somehow. Also the 400M needs a healthy dose of more compression than it was given, it has huge intake ports and valves and if built properly is a excellent performer, there was a HOT ROD a while ago where they built a high torque 400M
