Ok, i have the opportunity to buy a 78(not exact on the year, but late 70's)Ford Van with a 351w and automatic in it for 200 dollars. I have a 68 Ford with a 360 and 4spd granny gear that I've thought of changing over to a 351w and automatic. The 360 I have has a lifter knocking and uses a good bit of gas, but doesn't really have any problems other than that. I'm wondering about how much performance difference there would be between the 360 and the 351w. Are the power and performance pretty close in comparison or am I losing alot in this swap? I need to let the guy know by tomorrow so a quick reply is appreciated with anyone who can help. Thanks everyone.
I don't know what the specs are for a '68 360, but a '78 Windsor in stock form should have about 150 hp and 285 ft/lbs of torque. I tend to be biased ( I love the Windsor) but I've had both motors ('76 F150 with 360auto, '73 F100 with '75 351W & 3spd std)
and the Windsor was the better motor. Besides, if you want to put money into performance in the future, the Windsor is an excellant platform to start with and there are alot of companys now that make performance parts for the small block Fords. I hope to build a 393 or 427 Windsor stroker sometime in the next couple of years.
The windsor is definately the engine to have from your choices, but its gonna suck in stock form, build it up b4 you put it in, these motors can be built to make power on the cheap so do it
