Where do we find someone to give us an appraisal for the value of our truck? The DMV asked me what it's worth when I registered it, and our insurance guy also needs to know. Do I just take it to Vintage Ford in Sacramento and ask them to give me their thoughts on what it's worth, or is there a professional company that I need to ask?
If you pay for plates based on value, you my want to list it at minimum value for an old used truck for the DMV, a few hundred $.
My insurance co just wanted pictures and how I determined the value (purchase price) for the agreed value collision coverage. Ask before spending any money getting an appraisal. If one is required ask them to recommend an acceptable appraiser.
I had to get an appraisal for one of mine in ordeer to get a title for it from the State of Texas. Actually, they required two appraisals. I went to to a couple of local Ford dealers with pictures of the truck (it didn't run and was a basket case), the VIN plate form the glove box and the license plate. They both wrote me one up on the spot for nothing. Appraised value $100.00.
Might be different for something that actually runs and needs to be insured but a dealer should be able to apparise it for you.
Hey Offroad, here in CA, like others have said about their states, the DMV charges you based on what you tell them it's worth. Give them the lowest amount you can. The insurance company wants to charge you a premium based on the replacement value. You should either tell them a low number and have a more affordable monthly payment OR give them the real value if you expect to have them replace the truck for you, but you'll be paying for it in the premium.
