Question which heads to use??

ok i have a 75 302...and i have a set of heads off of a 87 (E7) heads..will the heads off the 87 give me any more power than what is already on there? On the top of the heads of the 87 there is a big T in the middle...does anyone know what this means? are the 87 heads EFI? how can i tell? I'm not too familiar with 302...i only have 3 of them, lol. Any answers will be appreciated.

Your '75 heads should have 1.78 intake/1.45 exhaust valves and 58.2cc combustion chambers. If you have them off or at least have the intake off, see what the casting number is.

The E7's have 1.78/1.46 valves and 60cc chambers. I have no info on port volumes, so I don't know what the differences are there (if any.)

I don't think you'd see much difference in performance between those two sets of heads, except for the loss of a bit of compression with the E7's.

As for the EFI question, every vehicle Ford built was injected by 1987, so yes, those heads are from an injected engine. It doesn't really make any difference in the heads, however. The heads don't care if you're pushing fuel through them from a carb or injection.

As for the T...I have it on my E7's too. I don't know what it means but I doubt it's important. The entire casting number for E7's is E7TE, the T in this case meaning Truck as the E7's were originally designed for truck use. Perhaps that's what the T on top means as well.

ok...i really didn't know much about it...i'm planning on swapping the motor out eventually, but i thought if i could swap those heads it'd give me a little bit more power, i heard in 75 the 302 only made like 140 horse, and i thougth changing the heads would give me some more power. Thanks for the reply Tiger

You could get more power out of that motor, just not with those heads. I doubt that you want to plunk down a grand or so on aftermarket aluminum heads right now, but you could keep your eye out for some '69-'70 351W heads, or even '75 351W truck heads.

Take a look at the Head Casting Number chart in the sticky at the top of this forum. It gives valve and combustion chamber sizes along with the corresponding casting numbers. You never know what a little junkyard or garage sale scrounging will turn up.
