Question tire sizes

in tire sizes in inches what dose the middle number stand for. for example the tire size 38.5/15-16.5 i know that 38.5 is the tire hight and 16.5 is the rim size what would the 15 stand for?

it stands for the width in inches mainly the tire width the tread width is usually different, look at www.intercotire.com and look at the tire size and specs

The middle number is the aspect ratio of the first number. If the first number is 38.5 than the second number tells you that the tire height is 15% of that 38.5.

No, when dealing with say a 31/10.5/16, the 10.5 stands for ~10.5 inches wide. a 31/12.5/16 would be ~12.5 inches wide. Both would be the same height.

It's only when dealing with metric sizes that it's a ratio. 235/70/15 means that the sidewall height is 70% of 235 (width) and it fits a 15" rim.
