I am trying to get the brake caliper mounts off my 76 F-250 dana 44 and they wont come off. I have every nut and bolt off of them that I can see and they are still on there just as tight. Is there a trick to getting them off or do I just have to pound them off? Thanks for the help.
I can't get the spindle off either, how do you do that?
I had a spindle that was pretty well rusted on too. I used a screw driver (Flat edged) and tapped it around the seam to the caliper holder. It looks when it's rusted like it is one piece - but it does divide (at least it does on a 1978). Anyway, spray some WD-40 on it too, tap the screw driver around it several times. Give it a few good wacks with a rubber mallet - and it should separate the spindle. Once this is done remove the spindle & the drive shaft. Then, your brake caliper holder should just bang off too with a few whacks of the rubber mallet. The bolts are attached to the axle housing.
You might want to consider replacing the little "O-ring" gasket that is on the back side of the axle & be careful with the spindle...there are little roller bearings at the back of it...don't jar those loose if you intend on using the spindle on your re-assmbly.
The Ford Dealer will have them if they are bad - about $16. The O-ring gasket that goes on the drive shaft is about $8 from your local NAPA/AutoZone/etc...
