Tachometer

I have an 86 ford f-150 with the inline 6. I was traveling, looked down and the tachometer was all the way pegged clockwise on the right side. Enginer rms were normal and now its stuck there. I put a used engine from an 85 in about 1 month earlier. I used the distributer and coil off of the 85 enginer. Could this have anything to do with my problem. Or is it probably the guage? Anyone experienced this, if so what was the problem in your case?

Sounds to me like the guage flipped out. Probably will have to replace at least the tach part of your instrument cluster. None of the electronics from the other engine i would think could have caused that...but again i'm not sure.

It could also be the ground to the TACH.

is the ground for the tach at the guage cluster or? Also can you just replace the tachometer or does the whole gauge cluster have to be replaced, anyone have a source on just the tach itself.

80-86 tachs are frequently for sale on eBay, usually as part of of complete instrument cluster, for winning bid prices below $50. The tach works for all years from 80-86, but the 80 and possibly early 81 clusters have a different circuit board from the later years and are not interchangeable.

The tach eventually grounds to the distributor via the B/LG dot wire coming from the Duraspark II module.

Yes, the boards are different as stated, but the tach itself is the same for all those years, even the E series van. Just pull out the tach from a whole cluster, keep the rest for parts.
