Part Identification Help Please

I have a 97 Powerstroke. There is what looks just like an oil pressure sending unit but isn't on the left side of what looks like something to do with the fuel sysytem. It is a round cylinder about five inches in diameter and roughly five or six inches high. This cylinder is directly to the left of the Glow Plug Relay. It is leaking what I believe is diesel fuel. The locations I gave are from the drivers seat. Two questions I have are one what is it and two can I safely run the truck with an 1/8 pipe plug in place of it (it has 1/8 inch pipe threads) Thanks for any help you can give, Ed

The big cylinder is the fuel filter canister. The Sending unit is a vacuum switch that tells the dash indictor (and you) when the fuel filter is plugging up. It's a very handy thing to have if you don't change your filter often. There is no problem plugging the hole with a pipe plug if you change the filter regularly.
