Manual Hubs
See what you think of this. My 1990 came from the factory with auto locking hubs. 1990 Full SIze with 302 5 speed. The person I bought it from had replaced them with manual hubs. I recently (today) tried to replace on which broke when I tried to remove it. So i picked up a set of Warn manual hubs. When I tried to put it back on it would not fit. It stuck out too far. I compared the hub body to the old one and saw that it was thicker than the old by about 1/4 of an inch. I called Bronco Graveyard and spoke to someone who said there was a conversion kit supposed to have been used when going from auto to manual. When I looked inside my hub (with the manual locking hub body, etc removed) I saw a C clip and a spacer, behind them were the locknut, washer (The one with holes all the way around it) and another lock nut. The gentleman at the graveyard said there should be nothing in front of the locknut, washer, locknut combo. So I removed the C clip and the spacer, and the new HUB fit. My question is: IS this correct. Were the C clip and spacer a remnant from the auto hubs? Or should I leave them in and look for the thinner body manual hubs? They appear to be generic, as there are no names on them. Is it safe to drive without the C clip and spacer? Sorry for the length of this post.
