While watching TV shows like OverHaulin etc. I've noticed they seem to be buffing the clear coat with a dry buffing pad. Is that really true or is the compound they are using really clear / thin / liquid. There seems to be no mess at all. Maybe it's a special pad?
Many moons ago...I would always make a huge sloppy mess buffing. Now the last time I bought stuff to buff with, I found out I was a bit out of date. The buffing compound did'nt need to be lubricated with water to keep from burning the paint.Instead it was self lubing, you buffed until the compound went dry, then kept buffing to a shine...really neat stuff.
What you see on overhaulin' is after the fact buffing. I've been using a single stage buffing compound and you don't buff it till it's dry, I think it's called James or Johnny Wooten. What are you using seetwisted?
3-M Perfect-it Foam Polishing Pad Glaze...the bottle I'm looking at right now is part#05996 for dark colors, when I bought it I remember the counterman telling me the product comes for light or dark paint jobs.I used to custom-paint motorcycles for a living, and I am constantly amazed at all the new products. And yeah,I almost forgot,I picked it up at an autopaint supplier.D'angelo's,I don't know if they are national or not,but their people have always been helpful to any questions I had. And I believe that compounds are pad specific now days, ask your local guy or try to read the itty-bitty print on the back.
I have wetsanded and buffed the entire cab on my truck. I used the 3M perfect it II buffing compound with foam pad that resembles eggshell you put on your matress. And 3M perfect it II machine glaze with a wool pad. I am new to all of this and it was all recommended by the counterman at the local body supply house. And both compounds are used until dried, then slow the buffer down and continue for a deep shine. I have dealt with 3 suppliers since getting into bodywork and they have all 3 been very helpful. I recommend visiting a body shop supplier when you are ready to purchase your stuff xlt4me.
