Metal Peices

I replaced the valve cover gaskets today and in the valleys over culindres 1 and 2 there were tons of metal peices that looked like broken peices of piston rings. Most of them were big 1/4 to 3/8 and they were all curved. I have no clue what they are. I don't know how peices that large could make it up to the valvetrain and if the rings were broken, I would expect the truck to smoke, but it doesnt smoke. Any ideas?

sounds like valve springs are broke pull the covers back off and look at the springs if they are they have to be replaced dose it mis at idle or have lifter noise

Are you sure the pieces are metal? Stick a magnet to them to make sure. I'm willing to bet that what you have found are whats left of your valve stem seals. after years in an engine they get hard and brittle and could easily be mistaken for metal.
