I have a 75 F100 custom with a 360. It has been running rough, so I took one of the valve covers off and I found a broken Push Rod. I'm going to Napa today to get a new one, but how do you install a push rod? Do you just loosen the rocket arm and slide it in? Any help would be great.
You'll need to loosen the rocker arm assembly. It is held down by four bolts along the top of the shaft. There is a little trick when loosening, be sure you crank each bolt just a little at a time to relieve shaft stresses and pressure. Otherwise you could possibly break the shaft. Loosen just enough to pop the old rod out and install the new. When reassembling, tighten each bolt uniformly a little at a time to around 45 Ft lbs.
In addition to Buzzard's advice,Ford wants you to turn the crank to a specific position first. Turn the motor about 45 degrees clockwise from TDC. On most engines there's a XX mark there.

Also alittle piece of advice from someone who has had a similar problem.Find out why it broke, I had one bent very bad it was about to break my problem was wore out valve seats. For what ever reason yours broke a new pushrod probably wont fix the problem.Chances are you will break another.
I do not know much about engine and I do not clame to. Where are the valve seats and are they hard to swap out for new ones. Could you give me some directions. That sounds just like mine, the valve was bent bad and when I got it out I was playing with it and it broke.
Take a level or somthing with a straight edge.Take of your Rocker arms, all of your valves should be the same height lay the level over them to make sure if some are taller than others than your valve seats for that valve have probably wore out and are causing the valve to set further back in the head which then gives you less clearence for the pushrod. If there is to much wear the valve will set to far back to where it puts more and more strain on the pushrod and will eventually break or bend it.To fix this problem you have to have the heads reworked and have hardend seats put in so that the problem does not come back. A temporary fix would be to get shorter pushrod but regular parts store do not carry you will have to have one made.buy a manual on your truck in there it will show you how to measure the clearence between the pushrod and the rocker arm this is called valve lash.
bluemustang, the '73 Service Manuals indicate that a slightly shorter pushrod may be available as a service part. You might want to check with your local dealer. Good luck.
