I am thinking about buying a 2004 F150 FX4. It has the black leather captain chairs and center flow through console. I am 6' 7" and it would be much more comfortable if the center console was not there or replaced with the "20" part of the 40/20/40 bench. How difficult would it be to remove the flow through console and convert it to a column shift?
I would assume there would be several parts on the steering column that would need to be added, can it be retrofitted or does a complete new column need to be purchased? The truck is a good deal and is what I want except for the console issue.
I do believe you would need an entire new assembly. Also, isnt that console molded into the dash? You would have to purchase the correct dash parts (if even available.... might be an entire unit). I think its definately a challenge if you could even do it. My suggestion is to keep looking.
well you need a new column , instrument cluster and the additional wiring harness. then you need new carpet. becasue when you remove the console the carpet has been cut in spots at the factory.
Most people want to replace the center section with a flow through, so it may not be difficult to find someone with a column shifter and black leather who would be willing to swap. It would likely be the only affordable way to do the swap if you cannot find a truck equiped the way you want.
