Hey guys whats new? Well ive been driving this truck but if it sits overnight not pluged in (i cant find the plug for it and was wondering if there is one or not?) but yeah that and after work when i try to start the truck up its hard to get running. Please let me know what you guys do that helps get these trucks to start easily. do you give them tome fuel as you turn them over? The truck got new glowplugs in it. Please give me soem advice.
thanks,
Jimmy
Put A Bypass Switch On Straight To The Glow Pulgs. It Will By Pass The Relay Swithch And The Wiring Harness. Both Of These Build Up Resistance And Are Very Hard To Correct Without A Large Pocket Book. When It's Installed Correctly You Only Turn You Switch On, Push A Small Button For About 10 - 15 Seconds In Cold Cold Conditions. And Start The Truck.
If you bypass the relay with your switch you are looking at a installing a very big switch and very big wires to and from the switch.
Fire is a possibility if you do it the above way.
A regular 20 or 30 amp switch will not carry the amps the glow plugs draw.
The first question that needs to be asked is what year is the truck?
Two different glow plug systems were installed in the IDI diesel trucks.
Different methods for repairing or bypassing are required for each one.
my truck is a 93 withthe 7.3 in it. The sales man showed me where he had put in new glowplugs in the truck. The truck after you wait for the glow plugs to warm up it will start up and then after 5 seconds of running it will sht back off. I shut the key off and try it again and the 2nd time itll hesitate then finaly start up. Please let me know if there is anythign i can do to get it to fire on the first time and keep it running.
thanks,
jimmy
Sounds like the glow plug controller is faulty. Try adding a switch to control the glow plug RELAY, not the plugs themselves. I had a tough time with mine for a while and I just kept popping the hood and putting a screwdriver across the terminals of the relay. Try that a couple times and see if it solves your problem, then you'll know if you need to replace the controller.
where is the relay located at? What do i look for when looking for it? Also when first startign this truck up you can hear a relay once it starts up kicking on and off for like 10seconds once running then it quits. when this relay is kicking on and off the volt guage shows its barely charging at all and everytime you hear the relay kick it changes the volt guage (starts comming up a little then when it clicks it drops then comes back up).
thanks,
jimmy
On a 93 the relay is a rectangular box on the rear of the intake manifold.
The controller is located under the relay.
Two bolts hold it to the intake.
The plastic cover snaps off and then you see this.
Wiring locations are labeled.
Check for any corrosion on the terminals.
Check the ground wire for a good ground, usually under one of the mounting bolts.
ok thank you very much. yeah it seems to always take 2trys when ti sits over ngith and its 20degrees outside if its warmer or if it was run earlyer the day itll start right up.
thanks,
jimmy
how long does the wts light stay on for?? when it starts, does it start rite up, or does it crank for a while?? after 5 seconds and it dies, and you cycle the key, how long does the wts light stay on, and then how long do you have to crank it before it will start back up?? it sounds like you may have a fuel problem instead of a glow plug problem.
I,ve had the same problem on both my trucks. If after it starts you cannot keep it running even with advancing the throttle you mite have an air leak. Most of the time if you fill the fuel tank your using rite to the top, park the truck with the engine down hill it may keep running with a small air leak, its a quick, simple check you can do and it may help you indentify a problem. If its an air problem, look at the post "fuel problem" On my 84 with a manual glow plug switch It will almost always start and stay running with just one glow plug cycle. hope this helps

1978ford........email me and I will send you the GP controller test, I would not put a manual switch on a 7.3 controller. I agree sound like a fuel/air leak/drain off problem not GP or controller.
